LIFE-SAVING PATROL
AT PARAPARAUMU
RESIDENTS' SUPPORT ASKED
The establishment of a life-saving club at Paraparaumu Beach, together with a clubhouse and general conveniences for the visiting public, was the subject of a recent meeting in the Paraparaumu Hall. The proposal had been put forward at a previous meeting attended by members of the Wellington District Surf Life-saving Association. As a result of the meeting ,the following appeal is being made to all residents in the district: —
"There are very few beaches throughout New Zealand that have not seen the necessity for forming a lifesaving team to assist in an emergency, and, although most people are of the opinion that Paraparaumu Beach is a safe one for bathing, we can never be certain when an occasion may arise that would warrant the services of a team with life-saving equipment. The saving of one life alone would certainly reward us for any effort we may make in this direction. There is no need, we feel sure, to impress upon you the urgent need for adequate conveniences, a water supply, and shelter for the visiting public, as you are, we know, fully aware that the present facilities are far from in keeping with the fast-growing popularity of Paraparaumu. It was the feeling of the meeting, therefore, that the proposal should be proceeded with immediately, and that some definite action should be taken for approaching the authorities concerned and for the property owners themselves to help further the project.
"Following on a suggestion that had already been made that a gala day should be held on New Year's Day,~it was decided to carry on with the idea. In this connection it was thought that arrangements could be made for some of the surf clubs to be present on that day and give a demonstration of their work, and compete for a cup donated by a resident present at the meeting, and also that an opportunity be taken on this occasion to raise funds for the commencement of the above proposals. One or two people present made very generous offers to help along the proposals on condition that all tl-e property owners at Paraparaumu would join wholeheartedly in the scheme."
Another public meeting is to be held on December 10.
