IMPROVED PERFORMANCES

Bill B.s performances on the race track have hardly justified the big price paid for him,, but he showed a semblance of form by gaining a first and second at Methven on Saturday. He was comfortably beaten by Fine Art, who conceded him 48 yards' start in the Avonmore Handicap, but in the Mount Hutt Handicap, a mile saddle event, he fought on in most resolute fashion. He lost ground in the early stages, and with half the journey covered his backers were not on very good terms with themselves. From then on, however, J. Bryce, jun., settled down to a very hard ride and, though Bill B. was forced to cover extra ground, he fought every inch of the journey and finally won in decisive fashion. The eight furlongs and a half were run in 2min 20sec, which represents a bit better than a 2.12 rate to the mile. The American horse may be better in saddle than in harness, but his latest effort was at least promising. For his win he has been penalised 36 yards for the Shirley Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday, and if he starts in this race he will have a chance to enhance the reputation he earned last week.
