DUNEDIN, this Day,
A magnificent specimen of fish known as the torpedo ray,, which has a faculty of emitting electrical discharges, has been presented to' Lhe Portbbello Aquarium.
Better known as the numb fish, *lhe torpedo ray is rarely caught. This one was brought to the surface -by a trawler. It is just over 3ft long and about 2ft broad. It has been placed in a large concrete tank, and seems to be settling down in its new en,vironment.
The fish is proviclea with electrical organs which can give a severe shock to anyone touching it, hence the name "numb fish." Oil from its liver is reputed to be valuable in the treatment of rheumatism. '■> ' • ; ? S
