"MODERN GRAND MOTHER"
LAND'S END TO JOHN O'GROATS
On her way to England, where she intends to walk from Land's End to John O'Groats in the record time of 18J days, Mrs. Kitty O'Sullivan, "New Zealand's Modern Grandmother," was a passenger by the Awatea to Sydney yesterday, where she will join the Strathnaver for Great Britain, states the "Auckland Star." .'■ ■
Mrs. O'Sullivan, who has already walked and cycled the length of New Zealand from Spirit's Bay to Bluff and from Melbourne to -Sydney, is sure that she can finish, her British walk in the time she has set herself. "In the old days I was' only learning to walk and I had bad roads, too," she said. "In the Old Country the roads are much better and I am now trained and fit. The distance is something less than 700 miles, and I haven't the, slightest doubt that I can do it in spite of the fact that I am now eligible for the old-age pension."
Mrs. O'Sullivan, while in England, will lecture and appear in stage turns to demonstrate her physical activity.
"It is my intention to learn to fly while in England," she said, "and if it is at all possible, I will fly back to New Zealand solo. However, that is at present undecided."
Mrs. O'Sullivan carries with her letters of introduction to the New Zealand High Commissioner and to many notabilities in the literary and commercial world. She will start her walk two or three weeks after, her arrival in England, probably towards the end of March.
