(From "The Port's" Bepresentative.) LONDON, January 5. Miss Jean Batten is taking a holiday on the south coast at St., Margarets Bay near Dover, before travelling north to give some lectures. ' Miss G. M. P. Hopkins (Christchurch), who has spent several months in England and on the Continent, will leave for New Zealand by the Rangitiki tomorrow.

"The Times" announced the engagement yesterday between Lieutenant Terrence Desmond Hernck, R.N., second son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hernck, of Hastings, and Miss Janet Aylmer Orbell second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Orbell, of Timaru. A bequest of approximately £5000 to the New Zealand Institute for the Blind is made under the will of the late Mrs. Isabella Grace Marian Inperson, who died in London.on October 3 The will, of which the Public Trustee is executor and trustee, provides that, subject to the payment of certain legacies, the residue of _ the estate is to be bequeathed to the institute. . ■' ,;■■. ■. ■ The talented Feilding musicians, the 'Misses .Vivienne- and Betty Blamires, who have- been, studying in London since 1935, have just achieved further successes. Black (Wellington) left by the Stratheden. on the last stage of her journey back to New Zealand after attending the convention of the International Florists' Telegraph Delivery Association at Philadelphia, where she represented the New Zealand unit of the association. While in London, Miss Black attended a floral school and qualified, for a Constance Spry diploma/Shortly before her departure, Miss. Black .entertained a number of London and New Zealand friends at Dartmouth House, the New Zealanders present including Mrs. A. de Castro, Mrs. Douglas Munro, Mrs. Schabb, Miss Ruth Mills, Miss. Anne Farcy, Misses M. and L. Cockayne, and Miss E. L. McLaren.'
