"LOVE THE LIFE"
TRAVEL BY CARAVAN
Now completing their tenth year of travelling by caravan, Mr. and Mrs. G. WV Allsop, of Auckland, according to a letter received by a friend in Auckland, have arrived in Cape Town from Australia, where-they completed a 7000-mile circular tour of the Commonwealth, states the "Auckland Star." Mr. Allsop, a retired hospital architect, writes that he and his wife still "love the life,",and that neither has experienced a day's illness since they took to motor caravan travel. The tour of Australia was lull of strange experiences, not all pleasant. On one occasion,. ./while travelling through Queensland; 'the . travellers struck a patch-of road.'where the surface was composed of black; glutinous soil. 'They parked their caravan by the roadside that'night, but while they slept a heavy rainstorm- deluged, the countryside, over sin of rain falling before daybreak. The caravaners" were compelled to remain in the same spot for two days. . Movement would have meant bogging the caravan. Later in the trip Mr. and Mrs. Allsop were unable to obtain'meat, and were reduced to shooting parrots, which they described as "a bit tough, but fleshy." They also shot kangaroos and wild turkeys, which- they boiled in a petrol tin. ■ ■ . Mr. Allsop's luxurious caravan contains many novel features. Carrying 25 gallons of petrol and 20 gallons of water, an independent generating riant, a lantern roof, a wireless set with collapsible masts, a kitchenette, and an ironing board, it is built entirely to the owner's own designs. A mirrored wardrobe for clothing is fitted. Other conveniences .include a small library and five electric lights "The summer rains are now falling up in Central Africa," Mr. Allsop states in his letter, "and we are loitering around the Cape coast at various seaside places until about March, when we will start for Kenya and the Uganda.''
