PLUNKET SOCIETY

UPPER HUTT MEETING

There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Upper Hutt branch of the Plunket Society last evening. Mr. F. Blackley made a special appeal for support from those who received benefit from the society's work. He said tnat persons who visited the rooms or had the nurse come to their homes should contribute a little more to the funds. The total subscriptions for the past year were £23 and donations £3. If each of those who benefited by visits gave a penny—there were over 4000 visits —it would amount to a considerable sum. The people of Upper Hutt were generous, and he felt that an appeal for support of the society would only have to be put before them. One thing that the new committee should do was to ensure that the receipts be kept up. The number of subscribers should be considerably greater.

Mr. P. K. Bryan considered that it should not be the nurse's ;ob to seeK subscriptions. He recognised it was difficult for a society to carry on without subscriptions, and it might be that ultimately the society would be placed in a difficult position.

Mrs. Berkeley t>mith (retiring president), expressed her appreciation of the work of the committee, Mrs. Thomas (treasurer), and Mrs. Rodgers (secretary).

A vote of thanks was passed to Nurse Armstrong for her valuable work.

The Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) said the community would never forget the generosity, of the patroness, Mrs. Balcombe Brown, when the branch was in a less fortunate position than it was today. He also spoke appreciatively of Mrs. Berkeley Smith, who had been a hard worker for the branch.
