Born in the Isle of Wight, she came to Australia with her parents at the age of 4. Later the family journeyed to New Zealand, where Mrs. Tonks resided in Wellington for 75 years. Mrs. Tonks married Mr. Henry Edward Tonks, who predeceased her about 53 years ago. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Walter Helyer, and a sister of the late Mr. W. J. Helyer and Miss Elizabeth Helyer, who was headmistress of the Mt. Cook Girls' School. Mrs. Tonks is survived by three sons, Messrs. H. E.H., W. J. H.. and J. C. The late Mrs. Tonks was a quiet but willing worker for the Salvation Army, and she was not only the oldest in years but the oldest member in New Zealand of that organisation. The high respect in which she was held was shown by the large attendance at the funeral service in the Citadel on Monday. The interment took place at the iydncy Street Cemetery.
