WATT CUP

TITAHI AT WHAKATIKI

Sleety showers, and a course sodden from previous rain, did not make for the best of golf at Whakatiki. Holland nevertheless played very good goli, going out in 37, and finishing steadily. . _, . R. Black was not in his usual form, not getting his length or running his shots up to the cup as he usually does. Holland was playing well up to his form on a course-that gave his extra length the advantage. Going to the third they were all square, but Black lost the next two through bad approaching. One long putt was a shade too strong to go in, though it hit the back of the tin. He reversed this at the fifth with a very fine approach putt, also at the next, where Holland narrowly missed holing a putt from the edge of the green, and halving in . 4's, was only 1 down.: The seventh was halved. Holland won the eighth in 3, Black over-running his approach, and was 2 up. Holland won the short ninth, where he should have taken a 2; missing a putt of under three feet, in 3, and turned 3 up, having gone out in 37. Both hit the trees from the tee at the tenth, Black losing more distance. Holland played a wonderful approach from a hooked second out of the rough, but missed a two-footer for another win, the hole being halved in s's. Black won the tricky eleventh in 4 to 5, Holland hitting a tree with his approach pitch, while Black scuttled his shot successfully underneath with an iron. . Holland took the twelfth, where Black overran, in 4, and getting down in 4 at the thirteenth with a 12ft putt, was 4 up. The next two were halved. H; C. Ribbands, on the 4 mark, turned out the best card yet produced at Whakatiki on Saturday morning—74 (35, 39), taking only 25 putts for .the round. Parker was 3 down and 5 to go, but pulled up to win. In the Ranish Cup at Whakatiki, K. K. Hendry beat T. Johnston, 5 and 4; D. Johnston beat T. Hewitt, 8 and 7; W. Chambers lost to C. H. Giles, 3 and 2; J. Rogers beat G. Sloane, 1 up; N. O. Maitland beat J. Scotland, 4 and 2; L. Quinn lost to D. F. Crombie, 2 down; D. Oliver beat R. Mexted, 6 and 4; J. Crawford beat G. Watkinson, 1 up; N. Tosswijl and F. Smith, e(11 square; R. W. Gray beat I. Gault, 3 and 2. ;; Manor Park and Paekakariki met on the Paekakariki links on Saturday and half-way through the matches the players were taken unawares by a severe southerly storm. All games but one were completed and the visitors won by 8 matches to 3, no points being allotted for the abandoned match. F. W. Page and E. Butler were absentees from the visitors' team, and A. S. T. Butler and E. W. Brockett, two of the Manor Park veterans, were called upon and both recorded excellent wins. The details of ■ the matches are as follows, Paekakariki players being mentioned first:—A. I. Murray lost to A. Clouston, 1 down; A. J. Craighead and J. Ogilvie, match abandoned at the thirteenth; N. McKenzie lost to D. Butler, 4 and 3; A. Gollop beat T. Wagg, 2 and 1; W. Gollop beat I. V. O. Duncan, 4 and 3; F. Smith lost to E. G. Moriarty, 2 and 1; A. S. Jaegers lost to A. Radford, 6 and 5- A Smith lost to W. D. Cooke, 4 and 3; J. Hanratty lost to J. Hennessey, 5 and 4; F. C. McNeill lost to A. S T Butler, 2 and 1; P. R. Wheeler lost to-E. W. Brockett, 4 and 3; A. Champion beat C. Allan, 4 and 3. A. Clouston played No. 1 for Manor Park and he and A. I. Murray had a very even match, the result being a win for Clouston on the last green Murray, missed a few short putts, and the sitter on the seventeenth cost him the match. In the other matches D. Butler was too steady for. N. McKenzie and recorded a good win, but Arthur Gollop evened things by accounting for T Wagg. The biggest win of. the series was recorded .by A. Radford at the expense of A.-.S. Jaggers, the former reaching the turn in 38, with a bad 6 atthe first.- It is very pleasing to see^that this player has regained his putting touch, and apparently he was very satisfied-with the few he sank during the course of the match. Lower down the list A. Champion played well and beat a newcomer to Watt Cud matches in C. Allan.
