MAKING OF CEMENT
PROJECT FOR MANAWATU
(Special to the "Evenlnu Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day.
The possibility of a cement factory being started in close proximity to Palmerston North was mentioned at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last evening in a letter received from Auckland. It was reported that an option had been secured over a fav-ourably-located limestone deposit and quotations secured for a complete plant, while data was available which allowed of accurate costing. Investigations showed that a plant erected near Palmerston North would be favourably situated for distribution to a market which would absorb the output.
Costing on conservative lines indicated that Hawke's Bay, Wellington, and Taranaki could be supplied with cement at margins ranging from £1 3s to £2 14s less per ton than the prices ruling at present and such reduced prices would still leave a handsome profit for the company. Each year the railways would handle 46,000 tons of freight as a result of the project. ■/, ,■ ..
