CASE OF APPLES

SOLD, AND SOLD AGAIN

A case of specially selected apples that has arrived in Wellington from the Nelson area has the distinction of having realised more money at auction than any other case of apples in New Zealand, over £39 having been paid for it although its sale is not yet completed. The apples were presented to the King George V Memorial Fund by the Hill Union of Fruit Growers, Nelson, and were put up for auction in that city. Each successive purchaser handed the case back to the fund until £26 12s 6d had been raised for the list opened by the Mayor of Nelson, and then the final purchaser, Mr. Charles Higgs, left for Wellington, bringing the case with him. ' Mr. Higgs approached the Wellington Fruit Brokers' Association and the case was offered for sale in one of the city marts this morning. It realised £ 13 for" the Mayor's Fund, the final purchaser being Market Gardeners, Limited. This firm will offer the case again tomorrow morning and after it has been sold as often as possible it will be taken to the Post Office Square where it will be offered to the public at 1.20 p.m. As the appeal concludes tomorrow there will not be another opportunity for further sales of the apples, but it is considered probable that the ultimate purchaser will present the apples to one of ihe cit^ orphanages,,especially as the case was given to raise tunds for children's health camps. ,
