BASQUE REFUGEES
NOT A CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MATTER
A suggestion by Mr. M. G. G. McCaul that the business men of Wellington should help the refugees of the Basque Province of Spain was given scant consideration by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr. McCaul said fhat the Basques had a long and honourable tradition, and were now suffering from the Spanish civil war. The business community might come to their aid by acting as "mothers to the motherless and foster parents to the children who have lost their parents." He suggested that the New Zealand Government might offer, through the British Government, to give a home and shelter to the children who needed It. Mr. J. T. Martin: I rise to a point of order.: i would like to know if this matter is within the province of the chamber and whether it should be discussed here.. The newly-elected president (Mr. A. J. Curtis) ruled that the question was not one for the chamber to discuss. Mr. Martin (to Mr. McCaul): I am sorry, but I have my strong opuv ions on this point. The subject then lapset| :
