TAITA ACTIVITIES

A very pleasant afternoon entertainment was given by the Madrigal and Drama .Circles of the Taita Women's 'Institute in the public .ball .'at Taita. There was a large attendance .of members and visitors, including representatives from sister institutes in Lower Hutt Silverstream, Wainui, and Upper Hutt. ' ■ .....'
Stalls were arranged around the hall for the sale of plants and garden produce, and for the exhibition of curios ■and antiques, and handwork executed ox the institute's arts and crafts circle. The knitted articles,1 embroidery, and tapestry work were of a particularly high standard, and made an excellent display. The curios and antiques, exhibited by members of the institute, aroused much interest. Ancient Chinese and Indian carving, island curios. fragile china and lace, and books ovex a century old were included in the exhibits. A beautiful piece was a Chinese tea caddy 2QO years old: and in -view ol the recent Coronation celebrations. Queen Victoria's" Jubilee book aroused special interest. The stall-holders were Mesdames. Foster, Quinn. WooTley, Young, Coker, and Miss Wilson,
■ A concert programme was provided by Mrs.,H. Dawson, conductor for the Madrigal .circle, . and Miss, Wilson,. leader of the drama circle.'.. "the Institute Ode." arranged as a part-song, was sung by the choir, who. also con-/ tributed "Rolling Down to Rio,'' "Love is Meant to Make Us Glad." "Who Is Sylvia?" "Blue Danube." and "Gentle-: men, the King.". Mrs. Westbury was accompanist for'',the choir, and for the singers in duets and solo items—Mrs. Brown ("My Hero," from •'The Chocolate Soldier"). Mesdames Swift and. Toomer ("Early,One Morning"), Mrs. Stedman ("My Prayer" and "Little One A'Cryin'"),'•"• and Mrs. Dawson ("L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour"). A quartet.j; (Mesdames Rothnie, Laws, Hunter, and Rait) appeared in cost«me in an amusing and well-staged version of "Tell Me, Pretty Maiden." The choir comprised Mesdames Dawson, Stedman, Rothnie, Parry, Hunter, Fuge," Brown, Wilson," toomer, Rait, Hey; Goodman, ( Silva, Swift, Sproull, Laws,. Dyer, Jones, Nolan; and Gill. Elocutionary items by Mrs. Pudney, "Dreaming John" (Drinkwater) and "The Grey Squirrel" ■', (Noyes), were much* appreciated, ,A;one-aet comedy. "Wanted, a Cook," -was produced by Miss Wilson, and enacted by Mesdames Draper, Gill, Nolan;. Dyer, and Rait. , Members of the geperal committee provided a dainty, afternoon tea. The president of the institute, Mrs. Foster, welcomed the guest?.:' and presented; Mesdames Dawson, Westbury. and Miss Wilson with flower sprays ,in recognition of their services. B.S.A. Women's Club, Continued interest is' taken in the monthly afternoon -meetings of the Wome.n'S'Club connected 'with the Hutt, Valley branch of the Returned- Soldiers' :Association.,!;Mrs. . Milne\pre- ;- sided over an increased'attendance for ; the May meeting. Mrs.! Ray Brown, vice-president, who . has been ■.temporarily executing secretarial duties, was relieved by a newly-elected, secretary, Mrs. Brittell. ■'.'■,■ Items given during the afternoori were songs by Mrs, Stedman ■ ("Twp Eyes of Blue" and "Little Brown House" and Mrs. Brown ("Love's Garden of Roses"), and jsianpforte1 duets by Mesdames I, Taylor and* Liebezeit, Mrs. Young held an interested, audience with her practical demonstration upon the making of "butterfly"wing" pictures; using for her material* glass, paint, :and tinsel paper.Samples of Mrs. Young's work were used to illustrate her methods.
Members of the committee we're tea conveners. Those present included Mesdames' Robins, Stedman, Evans, Brown, GarretV Liebezeit, Hamilton, Weggery, H, Taylor, I. Taylor. Young, Woolley, Bentley, Brittell, Milsom, V.. Potter, Wilton, W. Potter, Ashton, Shand, Andrews, and Latham. Dainty shoulder sprays were presented by Mrs, Brown to those who contributed towards the afternoon's entertainment: Mesdames Young, Liebezeit, I. Taylor, Stedman, and Mrs. Andrews, who accompanied the singers.
