PRESS OF EMPIRE

POWER FOR WORLD PEACE

SPEECH BY SIR THOS. INSKIP

NEW TASTE IN NEWS

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 25, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, May 24. .Major the Hon. J. J. Astor, opening ,the annual conference of the Empire Pre^s Union at his home in Carlion House Terrace, emphasised the auspiciousness of the occasion, inasmuch .as it was Empire Day and the Imperial Conference was in session. English newspapermen emphasised the value of the services of overseas journalists on British newspapers. The Minister for Co-ordination of Defence, Sir Thomas Inskip, delivered an address on the power of the Press, especially for world-wide peace and Empire defence, and declared that the British public must be taught to acquire a taste for Empire news, which at present they did not prefer to sensational trials or public scandals. The Empire Press had an unequalled opportunity to Veld the Empire into a united whole. Empire defence was no longer solely the interest of the United Kingdom. Too much emphasis on the vulnerability of Britain and her trade routes to air attack tended to produce a spirit of defeatism which was aot in accordance with the facts. Our organisation was at present in full blast, and all departments were, working with the greatest Efficiency under tremendous pressure.
