NEIGHBOURS' PLEA

THEFT OF CATTLE

PROBATION GRANTED

(By Telesrraph—fress Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 24 "It is very unusual to give probation for sheep or cattle stealing, because they are insidious offences that are hard to sheet home," said Mr. Jus tice Ostler in the Supreme Court when admitting Herbert Isaac Elliot, farm manager, Mahoenui, to probation for two years for the theft of cattle from a neighbour. "For that reason 1 do not think I have previously given probation for this offence," added his Honour, "but your neighbours, the men whose cattle you stole^ have come forward to speak for you." A condition was that Elliot take out a prohibition order for two years and pay the cost of the prosecution.
