"WRONG IN PRINCIPLE"
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I see; that a general meeting of members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and representatives of other trade organisations passed a resolution today condemning the proposed application of the graduated land tax to urban lands, and. speakers protested ;that the graduated land tax was "wrcng in:'principle.'';' / . ■ '■ ' ' ■.■ V .*.,.'
i Now, the • point is this: ; The com-.'munity-created .unimproved value' of ; the land 'of New -Zealand, today-is upwards of £300,00b;000, so that on a-5 'per cent basis; the unimproved rental ; value .of the land of the Dominion is '£15,000,000 a year. The existing land tax takes of this community-created land rent less than £500,000 a year, or less than £1 in every £30. Even the addition of the graduated land tax will bring the total land value tax up to some £1,300,000, or considerably less than £1 in every £10, leaving to the landholders in town and country £9 out of every £10 of the community-created rental value of the land. The Government's proposal can, .therefore. ,hardly be characterised as excessive.—l am, etc. QUIDAM.
