INTERVALS CHANGED
RULES FLOUTED
METROPOLITAN TROTS
Some consternation will be caused in official circles by the amended list of times for the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's August Meeting, as 40-minute intervals are provided for in direct contravention of the 35-minute interval required by the Rules of Trotting.
The rule is not arbitrary, but a precedent unworthy of the leading club has been created. Many clubs outside the metropolitan area, working under far greater difficulties than the,Addington staff, have proved that efficient organisation can cope with the shorter interval and make for a more enjoyable day's racing.
The club did not offer any explanation to the Press for its decision to ignore the letter of the trotting law, and it will be interesting to see what action the Conference Executive will take in the matter.
THe last race on the 'first day was started nearly an hour, late, and the field was enveloped in semi-darkness in the back stretch. This led to much adverse criticism, and no doubt prompted the committee of the club to flout the rules and advance the clock rather than bring further ridicule upon its antiquated \" totalisator, aptly described by a member at an annual meeting as- an "up-country" outfit. .
