SATURDAY'S DANCES

NAVAL VOLUNTEER RESERVE

Gaily striped blue and gold bunting and bright-Japanese lanterns decorated the headquarters of the Royal- Naval! Volunteer Reserve on Saturday evening on the occasion of the Reserve's annual .dance. The ballroom represented a 1 deck, guarded by a 4in gun at one end, while at the other end a wheel and compass completed for the dancers the illusion of being on a battleship. The "fo'c'sle," which carried another large gun and equipment necessary for mine laying and sweeping, was reserved for sitting-out, but at various times was used for dancing by some who, owing to the large throng present, found it difficult to dance, on the "deck." Around thte wall were cabinets containing, the various trophies won by the Division, which those present spent a great deal o£ the time between dances examining and admiring.

The orchestra played from behind a brightly-polished instructional torpedo,

but the fact of being near so formidable a weapon did not have an adverse effect on them, for they provided excellent music throughout.' A "ship" ! dance proved to.be very popular, each couple having. a card bearing the name of. a- warship. At intervals of a few. minutes, the "orders" Jor. ships were given, those Tiolding the names called out retiring from the floor. The remainder "cruised on" until the winning "ship" was called out. A streamer dance also caused much amusement.

A delicious supper was wheeled in from the lecture room, members of the Reserve making -excellent .waiters. Supper was also served in the ward room. .

■ The dark' blue of the Reserve v uniform provided an excellent background for the colourful frocks of the ladies present,, while the regalia of various other services contributed to the gay scene.
