SECOND DIVISION

ATHLETIC WIN HONOURS

The second division championship was decided when Athletic"" defeated WeUirigton College Old Boys at Prince of Wales Park. The game, though scrambling at times, was fast and extremely exciting, and Athletics slightly greater strength aU round gave them a deserved win. The teams were:—

Athletic.—Wilson; Badland, Pelham, Evans; Stott, Ma'rtlew; Mack: Christophers, Pope, Elworthy, Smith, Trott, Cleverley, Rolfe, Johnson. Old Boys.—Sturrock; Andrews, Binning, C. Hollis; Hurdley, Gray; Sadler; Morris, Worboys, C." Gotlieb, V. Gotlieb, O'Loughlin, Campbell, J. Hollis, Mark.

Though Old Boys had the advantage of a strong northerly, Athletic were the first to score, Evans, well served by Pelham, sprinting sixty yards for a try under the posts. Smith converted. Following a strong run by Andrews O'Loughlin kicked a good penalty goal, but Athletic soon led again, Evans cutting off Sturrock's clearing kick to cross too far out for Smith to goal. A series of attacks by Old Boys, with Gray and Binning prominent, led to Old Boys equalising. Evans ran into trouble under his own goal, and Binning dodged over for O'Loughlin to goal, making the halftime score: Athletic 8, Old Boys 8. Athletic soon led again on resumption, Pelham landing a good-field goal, but O'Loughlin reduced the lead a few minutes later with another penalty goal. Strong forward play put Athletic in the attack again, and Wilson and Pelham jinked through to send Pope over by the posts, Smith kicking another goal. The Old Boys pack swept the ground in a fast rush, and Worboys scored in the corner after a burst of short passing, O'Loughlin's kick missing. Smith kicked a good penalty goal for Athletic, and then Binning broke through to send Hollis away in a spectacular run from half-way to score. O'Loughlin's kick went astray, and the game ended: Athletic 20, Old Boys 17.
