OLD BOYS V. EASTBOURNE
Wellington College Old Boys visited Eastbourne this afternoon. Both teams fielded their strongest sides except that J. Plank was absent from the Eastbourne side on account of illness. The weather'! was fine, but a strong northerly breeze somewhat interfered with play. The teams were:
Eastbourne.—Crisp, McMillan, D. Plank, WaUing, Fleming, Common, Robinson, Berry, Griffiths, J. .Dellabarca, Clarke, Waite, M. DeUabarca, Quiniven.
Old Boys.—R. Wright, Burns, Dustin, A. Wright, G. Reynolds, Baldwin, Sadler, Bydder, M. Wright,, J. Reynolds, Claridge, Hewett, Lamason, Amies, Sounness. '
The referee was Mr. D. C. Lawson.
Old Boys kicked off against the breeze. After a speU of attack Eastbourne were driven back, and from a scrum on their 25, Sadler obtained possession and going through on the blind side, made a orilr.ant opening, before passing tb Burns, who crossed and grounded the ball behind the posts. Lamason converted. Old Boys 5, Eastbourne 0.
Eastbourne continually tried to open up the game, but the Old Boys backs were equal to all emergencies. From half-way an open movement started by.Bydder ended in A. Wright scoring. There was no conversion. Old Boys 8, Eastbourne 0. Despite the advantage of the breeze Eastbourne failed to make much progress, against the superior tactics of the visitors. Sadler played an outstanding game, giving his backs every chance to make progress. Eastbourne's first score was registered by Fleming, who kicked a penalty goal. Old Boys 8, Eastbourne 3.
Shortly before half-time, Fleming was again successful, first scoring another penalty goal and then potting a goal. Old Boys were continuaUy on the attack during the early stages of the second half, and, foUowing a good run. by A. Wright, Dustin scored and Lamason converted. Old Boys 13, Eastbourne 10. Lamason added a further three points from a penalty kick. The forward play was fast and willing, Old Boys having the better. of matters. Burns, with a splendid effort, went over near the corner flag. Lamason failed. Old Boys 19, Eastbourne 10. A. Wright scored after a good touch-line run. The kick failed. Old Boys' 22, Eastbourne 10. From a breakaway Walling got the ball near half-way, and scored. Fleming failed with the kick. Old Boys 22, Eastbourne 13. The last try was scored from a loose scramble, Lamason touching down and then converting.
The final score was: Old Boys 27, Eastbourne .13. :
The referee, Mr. D. C. Lawson, retired just before half-time with an injured knee, and was replaced by Mr. J. Bennett.
