POPULAR PEOPLE
- The, Silverstream Presbyterian Church was filled with one of the largest gatherings ever known in the district when a "gift evening" was held in honour of Miss Alice Stringer, whose'marriage to Mr. M. Gard takes place shortly.
Mr. Gard belongs to an old and wellknown Silverstream family, and Miss Stringer is a very popular member of the choir. Mr. Castle presided, and Mrs. , Castle and Mrs. Jones were hostesses.
The' earlier part of the evening was pleasantly passed with games, competitions, community singing, and instrumental items.
Mrs. Castle, when presenting the gifts to Miss Stringer and Mr. Gard, expressed the good wishes and congratulations of all present, and spoke of the affection and esteem in which Miss Stringer is held. Mrs. Riddling, on behalf of the choir, presented Miss Stringer with stainless knives, and Mrs. Haley gave shoulder sprays to the guest of the evening and the organising committee, The opening of the parcels, of which there were more than 130, occupied some time.
After a dainty home-made supper had been served, Mr. Burns, an old friend, spoke a few .wordssof acknowledgment and appreciation on belief of \ Miss Stringer's family, and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" concluded proceedings.
