REMAINING IN FIELD

THE ITALIAN ARMY

COMING RAINY SEASON

(Received January 2, 10 a.m.)

ASMARA, January 1,

An Italian staff officer states that the army is remaining in the field during the entire rainy season, and it is confidently expected that fighting will continue, though it is recognised that the rains will affect newly-made roads. LONDON, January 1. The Port Said correspondent of "The Times" says that Italian traffic passing through the Suez Canal lately has been very heavy. From December 25 to December 29 nine transports passed, carrying 15,866 men, also cargoes, principally cement, benzine, and aeroplanes.

An Addis Ababa message states that an urgent call has been received from the Ogaden front asking for the dispatch of gas-masks, indicating that the Italians are using poison gas. Heavy fighting is reported on the north front, the forces of Ras Kassa, Ras Sjyoum. and Ras Mulugheta converging on Makale from both sides. It is believed they suffered heavy casualties.
