THE WRONG ORDER

PUBLIC'S FIRST VENTURE

The public picked the first four placings in the Featherston Hack Handicap, but they did hot select them in the desired order. Colenso, a shortpriced first choice, was finishing on again third, but he ran an indifferent race, badly losing his position when running second to Otauru King at the sharp turn near the five furlongs. It was a rough race, and possibly he was one of those to suffer in the various scrambles, though it might have been the turns that troubled him. The winner was Dorado, the third favourite, who was recording his first success since the winter before last. Never further back than fourth, he was up second to Otauru King at the straight, and after the leader weakened lie comfortably withstood a challenge from Shy by three parts of a length. He is a well-bred five-year-old halfbrother by Grandcourt to Moorland, Doree (dam of Princess Doreen), Coronilla, etc., but though he has been consistent in minor placings he has been disappointing for a long time. He heralded his possible return to form by running a close second to Umpne recently at Otaki, and he -was having his first race since in winning yestera Shy, the second favourite, was another to suffer in the BcrambH being sent back early, but he was moving up fast again on the home turn and ho was the only one seriously to challenge the winner. Colenso got up to take third money off Treasure Hunt on the post, but over two lengths bchiidShy- Treasure Hunt was handy throughout. Consummation was running on fifth, but Otauru King stopped Tareha, after being first out, was one of the worst sufferers in the hist iostling for positions. Te Rangitumau showed pace in the middle stages when passing Colenso. Vinco ran a fair race.
