WAIRARAPA MEETING
EMINENT SCORES IN CUP
BIG INCREASE IN "TOTE"
Although the weather became overcast during the forenoon across the range, the sun burst through again shortly after the racing began on the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Tauherenikau yesterday, and it was a brilliantly fine afternoon providing ideal conditions for an enjoyable day's sport. There was an excellent attendance, greater apparently than anticipated, for race-books were unprocurable after the first event. The track was in good order, but the turns proved troublesome to many of the horses. Form did not work out as satisfactorily as it was anticipated it would after so much of it had been exposed during the Christmas racing, and the favourites generally had a much leaner time than ordinarily at this fixture, besides which some rank outsiders came home to discount the public. However, the betting was always keen, and the day's investments amounted to £16,551, as against £10,633, on the first day last year, a substantial increase of £5918. The racing was not of the high standard witnessed, for instance, at Manawatu last week. Several wellsupported horses were badly beaten by the turns, and the general exhibition of riding judgment was very poor. Eminent, a rank outsider, finished well to win the Wairarapa Cup decisively, and Acceptable scored a clever victory in the Wardell Handicap. T, R. George s stable had the current right against it, success not coming its way till Hme Ra won the final event narrowly. Besides Hina Ra, Trentham trainers provided winners in Brabant, Revival, and Acceptable.
