AT MARTON
CUP TO TOUT LE MONDE
OPEN SPRINT TO INVOICE
The Marton Jockey Club's Summer] Meeting opened yesterday in fine weather, and there was a light cool breeze. The attendance was large, and the totalisator investments amounted to £13,331 10s as against £15,783 last New Year's Day when his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester was present. The course was in good order, and the racing was good despite the fact that the scratching pen was much in evidence. SETBACK FOR THE PUNTERS. The public went solidly for Dungarvan and Cloudy Bay in the Maiden Plate, but they were beaten out of the money, the dividend-payers being Merlyn, who paid over a score on the win machine and double figures on the place, and Apopo. When the tapes went up Merlyn, from wide out, raced to the front to set the pace from War Lap, Apopo, Warehi, Fleeting Arrow, Cloudy Bay, and Bacchus Marsh. There was not much alteration crossing the top where Muggins was trailing the field and Dungarvan and Cloudy Bay well back. Rustem was making some play running to the straight, but the leaders were unchanged as they turned for home. Merlyn had a commanding lead, and she stuck on gamely to beat Apopo by a head, and Fleeting Arrow was a length away, with Bacchus Marsh close up fourth. . . . There was an inquiry mto interference at the start, and as a result H. Thomas rider of Bacchus Marsh, was stood down for the meeting. Among the horses who were interfered with was the favourite, Dungarvan. BATTLEGROUND BEATS GOLD CURE. Battleground was second to Royal King at Otaki, and the Otaki-tramed gelding went one better at Marton when he beat Gold Cure into second place. Gold Cure was in front before the field had gone a furlong, and going past the stands he was clear of Affliction, with Battleground running next. The order was unchanged into the back, but passing the five Battleground moved up into /second place. Gold Cure, Battleground, Affliction, and Count Roussillon were bunched at the home turn, where Battleground issued his challenge. He was first oyer the last fence, and, _ once over, the issue was not again m doubt, Bait eground finishing solidly three lengths in front of the favourite. Affliction was third, four lengths further back. BRACELET EASY FOR WYNDALE. There were seven of the Bracelet field scratched, leaving seven starters. Wyndale, the top-weight, was favourite, and he won nicely from Royal Peak and Otaki. Otaki led out. Of the straight, followed by Ruenzon, General Quex. and Tiger Bill, and as .they turned into the back "stretch Ruenzon moved up to Otaki, the pair showing the way across the top, attended by Tiger Bill, Royal Peak, and Wyndale. Otaki, Royal Peak, and Ruenzon turned for home almost in line, and Wvndale was tucked in behind on the fence. Otaki and Royal Peak were fighting it out in the straight when Wyndale shot through on the inner to win by two lengths from Royal Peak, who hung on to beat Otaki by half a length. Tiger Bill was fourth and Ruenzori next. SYMCONY TOO GOOD FOR LAUGHING LASS. Laughing Lass was favourite for the Juvenile handicap but the speedy Symcony proved too good for her. Symcony began best, with Surprise Rem and Laughing Lass following closely. They had not gone far before Laughing Lass was in second place, with her work cut out to keep within striking distance of Symcony, who was going along very smoothly. Symcony raced for the straight three lengths ahead of Laughing Lass, and Surprise Item, well clear of the others, was four lengths further back. Laughing Lass was under pressure at the distance, but she could make no impression, and Symcony won in effortless fashion by a good three lengths. Surprise Item was third, four lengths away, . and Laughing Lad and Starbeam finished together. TOUT LE MONDE FINISHES BRILLIANTLY. Golden Hair and Tout le Monde were solidly backed for the Marton Cup and they returned the dividends, Tout le Monde finishing brilliantly to get the larger portion of the stake, uay Boy and Tout le Monde got the worst of the start, but the others broke the wind for them over the first two furlongs. The early leader was Golden Hair from Round Score and Hunting Lodge, and the order was unchanged into the back where Golden Hair was half a length ahead of Round Scoie. At the half-mile Gay Boy, just in front of Hunting Lodge and lout le Monde, was in third place. Golden Hair, closely attended by Round Scoie, was first to turn for home and Hunting Lodge and Tout le Monde had closed up At the distance Tout le Monde commenced his run, and the race was in his keeping well, short of the post. Then Hunting Lodge put in a cla m and Golden Hair just shaded Round Score and Hunting Lodge for second, just over two lengths away from the winner.
INVOICE COMPLETES THE DOUBLE. There were eight starters in the Kailway Handicap for which Invoice was preferred to Limulus and ftrobh. Royal Routine was first to break the line, and going down the back Royal Routine was followed by Limulus Invoice, and Fulojoy. At the half-mile Fuloioy was in second place, ahead of Limulus, but Invoice had been checked, and he had dropped back to sixth behind Waste Land and Porotiti Fulojoy was in charge at. the home turn and she led into the straight closely followed by Royal Routine, InvoiceLirhulus, and Porotiti Fulojoy was soon headed by Royal Routine but Invoice then came through with a rush and went on to win easing up by a length and a half from Royal Routine, who was kept at it to hold Limulus and Fulojoy, who were heads away.. Porotiti and Bodyline were next. A FOUR-HORSE RACE. Out of eleven acceptors only four horses paraded for the New Year Hack Handicap. Middle was favourite, but after being second into the straight he finished out of the money. Trimden, from Petrarch, Blue Tiger, and Middle, was the early order, but Petrarch went out to set the pace, and he was three lengths ahead of Tnmden and Middle as they turned into the back. There was no alteration until the home turn, and Petrarch led from Middle and Blue Tiger as they swung into the straight. Blue Tiger soon collared Petrarch, and he went on o win by three lengths from Petraich, who was a length in front of Tnmden. DASH HACK HANDICAP. Out of fourteen acceptors in the last event only six horses stood thenground. Lifeguard began very quickly, and he was followed by Vivienne, Ethiop, and Chief Ranger in line. After they had gone a furlong the order was Lifeguard, from Ethiop, Golden Chest, Vivienne, and Chief Ranger and this was maintained across the top. Lifeguard led into the straight ahead of Ethiop and Golden Chest, but Eihiop soon collared him, and Ethiop won well by two lengths from Lifeguard, who hung on to beat Chief Ranger by a head.
