AT ELLERSLIE

DERBY TO GREEK SHEPHERD

SURPRISE BY MUNGATOON

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, January 1

Every favourite was defeated at Ellerslie today, but there were no large dividends. In spite of the heavy rain recently,, the track was in good order, and some fast times were recorded. There was a good attendance and the totalisator investments were £55,921 against £45,127 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £10,794. The total for the three days is £166,923 against £154,268 10s.

Valmint scored a very easy win indeed in the Ellerslie Handicap, but his task might have been made harder had not Light Comedy been badly knocked back at the five furlongs, where Small Boy also got it badly. Botli dividend payers came from the middle of the field. Mafeking, Survey, Tidalia, Diacquedoon, and Bonnie Song went fair races.

Queen's Counsel finished too strongly for the early leader Moquette in the Midsummer Handicap and paid a surprisingly fine price. The Wanganui filly failed to stall off Brilliancy. The winner registered a fine performance for she had some ground to make up. Inver, making his first appearance, displayed promise in running fourth. He was ridden by the Australian jockey W. Bartle. Rulette, the favourite, faltered near the half-mile and went back to last. WIN BY PRINCE OF ORANGE. Prince of Orange scored a long overdue win when he outstayed Erination in the hurdle race, the two taking the last obstacle together. L'Allegro fenced poorly, but did not do so badly for a novice. Delrain fell at the first fence, and King's Archer lost his rider when up with the two dividend payers. A HARD-RIDDENf FINISH. Mungatoon and Monanui staged a great finish in the A.R.C. Handicap, the verdict going to the former by a very narrow margin. Tybalt carried the field along-smartly, Kelly going with him. Senior was very sluggish, Wiggins being busy with the whip before the field had gone half a mile but he was still last four furlongs from home and finally missed a place. Mungatoon and then Monanui collared Tybalt at the bottom of the straight, and they forged clear of the opposition in the final burst. Argentic, Vanestep, and Kelly were a length and a half away, almost in line, with Tybalt further back. The winner paid double figures, springing his periodical surprise. Fersen and Gay Marigold were never likely. GREAT NORTHERN DERBY. The Great Northern Derby was won all the way by the southern colt Greek Shepherd, who was a good second choice to Heritage. The latter was slow away, losing about three lengths, and then he made up his ground going out of the straight, forcing his way through and interfering with Plato at this stage. Lowenberg was last, ten lengths away from the pacemaker, and Entail and Flood Tide tailed the bunch. The field began to bunch a bit at the five furlongs. Further on Heritage began to weaken, and Shu and Flood Tide moved up handy. Greek Shepherd retained his advantage, and was going away at the post, being two and a half lengths clear of Flood Tide, who was also well clear. Next, almost in line across the course, were Heritage, on the rails. Entail, Lowenberg (centre of the course), and Shu (wide out). It was a fine contest in which Greek Shepherd proved easily the best. Flood Tide was second best, going a good race. Heritage failed to stay, and Entail never seemed to be going kindly. Both Shu and Lowenberg were staying on, even if they were never possibilities. Dancing Lady finished best in a fine race up tho straight to win the County Handicap narrowly from a bunch comprising Whirling. Prince Yen, Karohia, Keith Lv, and Wahine Reihi, with Roaming, Solas,' and Teak not far away. The winner put up a fine performance, and so too did Keith Lv and Wahine Reihi under difficulties. ROYAL DANCE ALL THE WAY. Royal Dance jumped out smartly in the Newmarket Handicap and set the others a hopeless task. He was ahead of Galilee, Rereatu, Impasto, and Prince Acre at the home turn, where Variant and Star Artist were last. Royal Dance bowled along to score most decisively. Rereatu only held off Crooning and Silver Streak for second and Prince Acre and Variant were next. This was Royal Dance's first success in open company.

After Puss Moth and Namakia had made play to the straight in the final event, the Premier Handicap, they were quickly disposed of as soon as the field straightened up and Royal Appellant, Big Dook, who was slow away, and Adalenc staged a fine finish and were placed as named, well clear of the others.
