NOTABLE CRICKETER
ENGAGED FOR PALMERSTON

PALMERSTON N., This Day. ■ The services of Mr. George Wheatley, of Gladesville, Sydney, have been engaged by the Palmerston North City Council as groundsman at the Palmerston North sports ground.
Mr. Wheatley will be a decided acquisition to cricketing circles in the city in that he has won for himseU something of a reputation with the bat in Sydney. According to advice from the New South Wales Cricket Association, he has always been regarded as one of the best amateur coaches and a cricketer up to first grade standard. In 1921-22 he headed the New South Wales Association's first grade batting averages with 651 runs, an average of 59.18. He captained the Balmain Ciub's first grade team for many years, and during his term of office produced the 'late Archie Jackson, Sid Hird, and many other cricketers of note.
