AMATEUR ATHLETICS

WELLINGTON CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING

The Wellington Amateur Athletic Club has always been fortunate in the interest maintained in it by former competitors, and at the fifty-seventh annual meeting held last night Mr. A. C. Kitto, who presided over some 50 members, made special reference to the older members present, who, though beyond competitive age, were still active in their support of the club.

In presenting the annual report and balance-sheet, details of which have been published in "The Post," Mr. Kitto congratulated the club on the outstanding success with which it had met last season. It was, he believed, the most successful in its history, and reflected great credit not only upon the competitors themselves, but also upon the club's executive, which had left no stone unturned in its efforts to make the year a conspicuous one. Training on the Basin Reserve, Mr. Kitto thought, had proved far more satisfactory than at Athletic Park. Its convenience enabled the coaches to devote more time to club members, and all, he knew, appreciated their advice and assistance. HATATTAI TRAINING GROUND. It had been hoped that this season they would be able to obtain the new ground at Hataitai for training purposes, but it now appeared that it would not be available until at least the end of the year. The competitive side was flourishing, twenty new members had been elected, but Mr. Kitto felt that move attention could be paid to the social side of the club. It was a most important aspect of a club's activities. The Wellington Club did not care, he said, whether a man was a champion or not. All were equally welcome. He congratulated Mr. T. J. Crowe, who had been selected to represent New Zealand at the Melbourne Centenary Games. Mr. Crowe had followed in the footsteps of many noted club members of other years who had represented the Dominion. MUST KEEP BEFORE PUBLIC. In seconding the adoption of the report, Mr. A. A. Marryatt endorsed the president's congratulations on a successful season. He feared, however, that if the scene of activities were removed to Hataitai public interest in athletics would tend to lessen. It was a sport which must be brought right before the public eye. Mr. Kitto gave an assurance that their meetings would still be held at the Basin Reserve. Hataitai was to be regarded as a training centre. The club, it was suggested by Mr. T. W. Leslie, owed special thanks to Messrs. A. Hose and J. D. Beck for running the art union, the proceeds of which appeared so substantially as an asset in the balance-sheet. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Trophies won last season were presented by Mr. Kitto as follows:—Parsonage Rose Bowl, Miss J. Lark; Peat Pendant, Miss B. Boyes; D. J. Nathan Cup (field events), T. Crowe; P. J. Nathan Cup (most points in 220 yds), A. Welply; L. B. Webster Cup (special 220 yds), A. Welply; Oates Cup (cycling), L.
