CLOTHES IN RUSSIA
OFFICIAL FASHIONS
Soviet newspapers nave recently ben devoting a little space to women's clothing. Apparently a really serious effort is being made to bring Soviet woman's dress up to date, remarks an English writer.
The latest of the articles discusses "jumpers" (the English word has been adapted and is universally used in Russia) and criticises the "shocking bad taste" of some Soviet women. They are urged to stop wearing oldfashioned jumpers and to patronise the new models produced at the State factories.
To encourage women to be more fashionable the official "Pravda" announces'in serious tones'that this year alone the factories have designed 25 new fashions in jumpers and that 20 of them are how being made on massproduction lines. Soviet women are also told that their jumpers are designed by "engineerartists," and they are made of a mixture of cotton and silk. ;...It. is added,that.;.'so far no. new. fashions have been designed for men." o? dan.O i 1
