MINISTER'S REPLY

REPORTS OF DEPUTATION

When Mr. McLaughlin's statement was referred to Mr. Coates today, he stated that all he had promised was that the representations which had been made to him would be placed before the Minister of Employment and the Unemployment Board. This was borne out by the reports of the deputation in the "New Zealand Herald, and .the "Auckland Star."

According to the "Auckland Star" report, Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of the Labour Department, told the deputation "that special consideration would be available for necessitious cases in the matters of ration allowances.

Mr. Coates said it was clear the reclassification would not be automatic for a month, but would be initiated de novo as from last Saturday. Apparently all necessitous cases were reviewed as from that date.
