(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, October 12,
Proposals to bring the No. 5 scheme works in the city to an end and to complete the undertakings by employing about 500 men at standard rates, using a subsidy from tho Unemployment Board ~ supplemented by loan money, wore approved by'the City Council at a special meeting, on the motion of the Mayor (Mr, G. W-. Hutchison). A schedule of 22 works was adopted, and it was decided to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise a loan of £73,600 so that advantage could be taken of an offer of a subsidy of £41,730 from the Unemployment Board. It was stated that when the sanction of the Loans Board had been obtained the loan proposal would bo submitted to the ratepayers. In a report covering negotiations with the Unemployment Board the Town Clerk said that the council's action in endeavouring to depart to some extent from present conditions of employment under the No. 5 scheme was appreciated by the board, which had agreed to restore the original scale of relief by the restoration of the 10 per cent, cut in time in respect of those men employed by tho council at standard rates for days they would bo eligible to work.
