WESTERLY DEPRESSION

AND WINDY WEATHER

Special forecast for ' Wellington:—

North-westerly gale. Weather cloudy and mild, but becoming unsettled during the weekend.

Although barometers are still high this morning over the North Island, since last night the front portion of a rather vigorous westerly depression has moved on. to the South Island. The general forecast issued at noon today, therefore, is for northerly to northwesterly winds, which will be strong and reach gale force to the south of New Plymouth and Napier. Elsewhere they will be light to moderate, but will increase in force. A change to southwesterlies will take place later over the southern half of the South Island. Rain is likely on the West Coast of the South Island, and will gradually extend to districts with a westerly aspect and also to Otago and Southland. The weather in eastern districts will be fair to fine and warm. ■

The advent of the depression has caused northerly to north-westerly winds to increase in force from Cook Strait southward, and in the western districts of the South Island some scattered rain was reported this morning. Generally, however, the weather has continued fine with gradually rising temperatures. Auckland had' a continuance yesterday of fine weather with a light southwesterly wind. Conditions were calm this morning. Wellington had another fine and sunny day, with a light northerly wind. The wind was strong this morning, and more cloud was in evidence. Christchurch had a fine day, although tho afternoon was cloudy. Yesterday's wind was a moderate to fresh northeasterly. The weather this morning was overcast with a gentle north-easterly breeze.

Dunedin had a light north-easterly wind with fine and sunny weathor, but conditions this morning were overcast with a light wind from' the south-west.
