AMBITION FULFILLED

MR. E. MOSS WINS DERBY

(Prom "Vedette.")

■. SYDNEY, October 5. Theo's Derby victory fulfilled the ambition of the popular owner Mr. E. Moss. He has won good handicaps, and has almost won classics, but Theo did the job completely. The Limond —Mirabelle II colt fairly bulldogged the favourite, Silver King, out of first pla.ee.

Theo has always shaped like- a stayer, and this quality gained the race for him. Silver King tried to win all tlio way, but Theo gradually improved his position until he challenged a furlong from home. . Settling down to his work, Theo gradually overhauled Silver King, and beat him by half a length. Theo, who is prepared by Chatham's trainer, F. Williams, proved more than a second string to Sir John, also owned by Mr. Moss, but prepared by G. Price. M. McCarten, who rode Theo, said he had a good run'all through, and thought when ho ran to Silver King at_ the furlong post: he..would.win easily. He was surprised; however, by the stiff opposition, offered by the favourite, and Theo"■ ra --suporioi; only at the final pinch. .;' ■■ .... ■ ,': v.' /. :. 1 Silver King, unfortunately, was decidodly lanie on tho- Sunday -after the race. *Fis owner-trainer, E. I\ Walker, fcar3 that the; colt ;will take a long time to recover, and that the trouble is serious.

Dark Sky- ran a surprisingly good race i.-.to third place, the Melbourne colt being prominent all tho way. Another Limond colt in Gladswood was disappointing. He did not showany real brilliance, and could do no better than finish fifth. Marcus Cicero ran well for nine furlongs, but then retired completely. Cape York was rushed from last to be oearly up with the leaders p.t. the halfmile. His spectacular effort, although it was not maintained, showed that he is a useful galloper in the makings. Custodian was always in the ruck, running a poor race. Aztec, the Melbourne crack two-year-old of last year, did no better. Oustide of the placed horses the best efforts went probably to Duke, Caledon and Sylvandale.
