SILVER RING'S EPSOM

RIDING PLAYED BIG PART

(From "Vedette.") < .SYDNEY, October 5. Silver Ring's victory in the Epsom Handicap was "due equally to good luck, J. Munro's. riding, and the horse's own brilliance. The luck was Dermid's poor position at the turn. Yet only a jockey of Munro's strength and ability would even tlien have won, and Silver Ring, moreover, showed himself to be a real high-grade- galloper. . First and foremost a late decision was made—just two weeks ago —to concentrate on the Epsom Handicap, and E. W. King feared his horse would not be forward enough. He wanted the race just two weeks later. He was right, too, for Munro was holding up a very • tired horse aver the last fifty: yards, 'with Bermitli Hying ,up. One stride -past the post Bermid Was in front, and he was twelve lengths back at least at the turn. Silver Ring's brilliance stood to him early,, for he was ■ never further back than fifth, and he followed Closing Time (third) most of the way, He headed off the'leaders at'the Leger fence,.and then he .first'stalled off Dermid. Had he had another week's work he would havo'woh easily. As it, is he is still liable to win another good race before he returns,!.,' ■■.."'

Dermid's backers and owner-trainer (J. A. Donohoe) were most unfortunate indeed. The gelding could not go the pace early, but he came home with.,terrific dash. ' ,

The- favourite Australia Fair ran. on well into third place. He was not over, fortunate, but Dennid came from well behind him and beat him. . Closings Time,'in' fourth" place, ran a fine race, on the premises all the way. :

Autopay was,in one of his bad nioods nt the barrier and was hopelessly left, his own fault entirely. Golden Wings did not show up at all, and The Masquerad'er was early among the tailenders and stayed there.

Chatham had a great run, following the pacemaker Cid most of the -way. He was well beaten, however, by his 10.9 at the end of seven furlongs, and J. Piko let him drop right out of the xace when his prospects were hopeless. .G. Price's pair, Whittinghaui and Blixten, ran very moderately, but Care Free registered as good - an effort as any. of the beaten, brigade. Lough Neagh, one of the real fancies, ran below form, being in the middle of the field practically all.the way.
