PROBATION FOR THEFT
Nine charges of stealing sums of money ranging from 15s to 5s and one of obtaining 3s by false pretences were admitted by Timothy Griffin, aged 24, a motor-driver, in tho Magistrate's Court today, and he wan admitted to probation for two years by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M. He is to make ■ restitution.
Detective-Sergeant T. Y. Hall said that the accused was employed by a fruiterer delivering apples with a motor-lorry. He would call at a house, sell a case of apples for ss, and if a tori-shilling or a pound note were tendered, he would say he would get change from his lorry and then _ he would disappear. The police received cpmplaints of this from various suburbs during September. The total amount misappropriated was £4 18s 6d. The accused was a single man and had not previously been in trouble. "His character has been satisfactory," said the Probation Officer (Mr._ T. P. Mills), in recommending probation.
