VETERAN WALKER
MONEY FOR CHARITY
PRESENTATION OF CUP
During .-ran interval at the sports meeting on the Potonc Oval on Saturday afternoon a handsome silver cup was presented to Mr. ilarry • Alpc, of Wellington, the veteran walker. For some years past TMr. Alpe, who is 65 years-of age, has undertaken walks for the purpose of collecting money for charity. Ho walked from the General Post Office in Wellington to Pctone on Saturday afternoon, and on his arrival at the sports ground, accompanied by the University .walker, S. G. Eadc, ho was met by the Mayor of Petoae, Mr. D. McKensie, and. athletic officials. The presentation was -made by Mr. McKcnzic, who paid tribute to the philanthropic work performed by Mr. Alpe. "He is a great philanthropist," said Mr. McKenzie, "and I am sure wo are indebted, to him very much for his great kindness ' and help. He has helped many people in distress." Mr. Alpe said he felt greatly hon-. oured by the presentation, and he wished to thank the donors of the cup for their fine gift. Cheers were given by the gathering for Mr. Alpe. . The cup, which was forwarded by Miss V. Bates, Wellington, has on it the following inscription:—"Presented to Harry: Alpe for having collected £5050 for charity. Two old sports to an oia sport. 10/3/34."
