CRICKET TOURISTS

BOUND FOR ENGLAND

WEST AUSTRALIAN MATCH

; PERTH, March 23. On a wicket favouring the batsmen, the Australian cricket team commenced a match here today with Western Australia. The weather was ideal. Winning the toss, the State side had. first strike and at the end of the day had compiled 226 for four wickets.

The first wicket fell cheaply, Alexander being dismissed by Ebeling after making nine runs. Bryant, however, defied the attack, and punished all the bowlers -with the exception of Grimniett. He retired with a strained groin after a brilliant 70. Taafe.was unattractive and stubborn in batting 157 minutes for 50. He had two lives, and was not out with 68. ft. Bryant, the captain, made a bright and attractive 45 before being given out lbw to O 'Beilly. Hill-Smith was badly baffled by Grhnmett at 7, and Boach fell similarly without scoring. Lovelock was missed twice behind the wickets off Chipperfield, and was not out with 34. Except Grimmett, who maintained his reputation, but tired early, the bowlers were unimpressive, and were perhaps train-tired. Wall and1 Ebeling obviously did not attain their, speed, and possibly will improve as the game proceeds. The Australian, fielding was unenterprising.
