In many parts it was the densest experienced this winter, and in the later afternoon visibility in, the "Wimbledon district was reduced to a few feet. Road and rail traffic was greatly hampered, shipping in the Thames held at the anchorages, and cross-river ferry services suspended. There were many, road accidents. In the afternoon the fog cleared in central London, but remained dense in some of the southwestern suburbs. .
