SAMOAN YOUTH IN CUSTODY
KNIFE DUEL IN BUSH
APIA, January 24. > Latu, a Samoan youth, aged 16, was charged in the High Court with- the inurderj at Satapuala, of Vasa, a Samoan man. Accused was'remanded until January 31. ■ . Reports state that the men quarrelled over a girl, with" the result-that Vasa, who was miich older, threatened Latu on two occasions. ■' On Monday the men met on a plantation track. Words were: exchanged and. both slashed simultaneously with knives. Vasa wounded and pursued Latu, brandishing a knife and shouting threats. When overtaken, Latu turned and struck a second .blow, which severed Vasa.'s hand above; the wrist. A third blow split his skull. The injured man was taken to Apia and died on reaching hospital. The district officer of the Leujinioega police post arrested Latu three hours after the fight. :
