LABOUR DAY SPORTS

ATHLETIC CLUB SUCCESSES

1 Monday apparently, and it is not '■ surprising, was too early for quite a number of athletes to be stepping out, but, for all that, there was a fair re- ' presentation, from the different clubs at the meeting conducted by the Lab: our Day Celebration Committee at the Basin Beserve, and competition was interesting in most of the events. Now that a start haa been made, greater activity should be noticeable during the next few weeks. A start is to be made on Monday with She programme of evening meetings, details of which have already been given, and these twilight fixtures, from 6 o'clock to' 7 o'clock on the Basin Keservo, should provide plenty of good 'competition. W. Crooks, the Petone sprinter, a late entry, made a promising start. He is a determined runner, and his second place from the 6yds mark in the 100 yards handicap and first place in the 220 yards handicap with a start of 10 yards were good efforts. Ho had a keen tussle with M. B. Furlong (Kiwi), 12yds, in the 220 yards, Furlong being unable to hold him over the last fifty yards. H. Marment (Athletic), 9yds, would have given added interest to the final, but, unfortunately, ho missed the start. A good win was scored by 11. J. McLeod (Kiwi) in the one mile handicap when he led C. Campbell (Olympic) and J. O'Brien (Athletic) to tho tape. Campbell, who was on tho scratch mark, has been running for years now, but he is still a good one. B. Coombes (Athletic), who with 55yds, was on the limit mark, won the 880 yards handicap, with O'Brien, again in tho picture, filling second place. Third place wont to D. K. Thorn (Athletic), who filled a similar position in the final of the 100 yards handicap. Athletic Club representatives were particularly successful. Apart from those already mentioned, Misses C. Gilmoiir, J. Simpson, L. Oughton, and F. Flan shared the places between them in tho two ladies' sprints, and the four of them also- won the relay. In the cycle events Athletic Club riders also were prominent. K. Wilson was second in tho mile and third in the three miles; J. Wilson was first, A. King second, and B. Lystcr third, all Athletic Club boys, in the half-mile, and another member, L. W. Sowerby, won the three miles. Athletic have a strong team of cyclists and they promise to make things interesting, when O. Disley, E. E. Pouiton, and others get going, for E. Ulnier (Old Boys) and T. Eoe (Petone). EoS was given 35yds start from Ulmer in the second heat of the one mile. He won and Ulmer was unplaced. Eoe showed further appreciation of this start in the final, which he also won. He was brought back from 20yds to syds in the first heat of the half-mile, and this time Ulmer Bcored most decisively from the scratch mark, although he was not in the placings in the final.
