A PIONEER'S BIRTHDAY

GATHERING AT SHANNON

A very happy gathering of old friends and relatives took place at the residence of Mrs. F. Venn, Claphani Street, Shannon, recently, to celebrate heir eighty-third birthday. Mrs. Venn, who is one of the pioneers of the Palmerston North and Horowhenua districts, is wonderfully active and bright and still takes keen interest in social and church work. Her beautiful home and grounds, hothouses, and display of tulips wero much admired by the guests. Musical items were given by Mrs. E. J. Spence and Mrs. Larsen, and community singing by the company passed a pleasant afternoon. A delicious tea was served, and two beautiful cakes, the gifts of Mrs. T. Brown and Mrs. Eado - (Tokomaru), were cut. Mrs. Venn was presented by Miss E. Crowther with a beautiful shower bouquet. Group photographs were taken on the lawn, after which the gathering concluded with singing "Auld Lang Syne" and "She's a Jolly Good Fellow," played by Miss Elva Hook. Among the guests were Mesdames Baxter, Barnett, E. J. Spencer, J. Hallam, Brown, Eade, Dittmar, Larsen, the Misses Seifert, Duncan, Larsen, Low, Newton, Crowther (2), Dittmar, and Hook.
