INTEREST PAYMENTS

SOUTHLAND POSITION

HOPE FOR SETTLEMENT

Negotiations between the Southland Electric Power Board and the Acting Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coatcs) in reference to the payment of interest to London bondholders were continued today. Interviewed this afternoon, Mr. Coates said that as a result of the meeting he wa9 hopeful of the question being satisfactorily settled. It is believed that the Government view is that whatever the decision of the Southland Power Board may be, interest due to bondholders in London will be paid in sterling, as the Government considers this to be essential in order to maintain New Zealand's credit abroad.
