MR. J. M. SAMSON'S HORSES
It is satisfactory to note that Mr. J. M. Samson is continuing to keep fin. active interest in racing, and seven horses to carry bis colours are at present, in work at Riccarton. Southdown, who struck winning format once at the recent Grand, National Meeting, is remaining in charge' of A. McAulay, but the other half dozen are being prepared by P. MeGrath. One of the latter, Guarantee, will share with Southdown the honour of representing-Mr. Samson in important three-year-old races. Guarantee does not appear to be so forward as Southdown, nnd he is not engaged in the Dunedin Guineas, but he figures in the Great Northern Guineas. This event clashes with the Xew Zealand Derby at Riccarton, but a mile may suit Guarantee better, than a mile and .1 half, and it is just :■ possible he will be sent up north if he comes quickly enough to hand. Among MeGrath's other horses m work, Bell Hill and Cleaner are the most forward, but they have shown no form so far. Bell Hill has' had a few private lessons as a. jumper and he may shortly be tried over hurdles. Red Dance, a three-year-old by Rosenor from Red Jazz, and Tea Dance,- a three-year-old brother to La Poupee, are novices who show promise. The sixth member o£ the team is a two-year-old filly by Tea Tray from Dancing Doll, thus a full-sister to La Poupee and Tea Dance. She is small but she is a likely sort for early races, as she has a fine turn of speed.
