MAORI FOR PHAR LAP
THE MEANING OF WHERIKO
Wheriko, so Australian inquirers have been told, is Maori for Phar Lap, which is Siamese (or Cingalese) for "bkyWink," meaning Lightning. The three-year-old colt who carries this name Wheriko is a much-discussed horse in Australia at present. He is by Night Raid from Satisfaction, by Bezoniiin, and is thus a half-brother to Receipt and Battle Colours and three-quar-ter brother in blood to Blixten, who^ is by Night Raid from Receipt. H. R. J.eli'ord bought Wheriko as a yearling at the Trentham sales for 450 guineas, but before he raced he became the property of X A. Connolly, who until, recent years was a leviathan of the Australian Inn. 'Wheriko, who was bred at Gladstone Park, Orari, raced only twice last season, and in his third start, at Caulncld a fortnight ago, he gave ail impressive display in winning a division of the Cliatswortli Plate when obviously above lnms-'eU. ills surplus did not prevent him from loading nearly all the way, and at the finish he was goinu away from the field. He is now to so to Sydney for racing ati.andwick. He is entered for the Derbies, and has 7.0 in the Melbourne Cup. The second division of the Chatsworth Plate was won by Dick Devon, a son ct Devonshire, who was raced in Australia by Mr Connolly.. Unlike Wheriko, Dick Devon was bought "dirt cheap' as a yearling for 20 guineas, and he has already earned sufficient money to make him a profitable proposition. He is engaged 111 the Victorian Derby.
