USEFUL HAWERA TEAM
FOR NEXT WEEK'S RACING
(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, August 25. Hawera stables will be well represented at the Tarauaki Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday next. J. Fryer will have March Alone,' Weatherzane, Haunui, and the hunter Silver Band; J. Brown Little Doubt, Carfex, Xo Doubt, and Whenuakura ( two-year-old parade); R. Brough Richfield, Le Campion, and St. Clara; AL Conway Don Erma; and W. Pine La Crown. These horses have made steady progress, and some stake-money looks like coming their way. Of the maidens Xo Doubt has made marked improvement. He has come to hand quickly and ho will be hard to dispose of over short courses. Haunui and St. Clara are also well forward and are doing good track work. March Alone has also made rapid recent progress, and is again showing his old ability in his track essays. .During his let-up Gibraltar put on some much-needed condition, and he looks better than at any time since coming to Hawera, although he still works stodgily. Weatherzane is nice ami bright, and goes determinedly in his gallops, but his action will always prejudice him in,, the eyes of track watchers. Little Doubt never looked better, and is working well, but very rarely does he run up to his track form. J. Brown will probably try him over the luirdles later on. C. Jackson has started giving Aga Khan more solid work. This Chief Ruler gelding is still carrying plenty of condition, but is such an energetic worker that a few weeks' good pace work should take the superfluous lumber off him. Carfex 'is in great order, and is doing his work very attractively. On Thursday ' morning he went at a sound pace over a mile and a half, finishing up his task'by I coming home his last three furlongs in a tick tinder 43sec. He is a splendid-winded horse, and it will occasion no surprise to see him finishing out a race like the Mitchelson Cup in rare style. M. Conway took charge of the hunter Don Erma on the eve of the Wauganui Hunt Meeting, and the gelding was successful in winning his race very easily. By Danilof he is related on the dam's side to fair performers over steeplechase country in Pikimai arid Haeremai. He has joined up with Conway's team to be prepared for future racing. He is a bold galloper, with plenty of pace for hurdling, ami he is a fine jumper. I The Messrs. Startup have _ recommissioned Calamine. and she is again under Conway's care. After a lengthy spell she looks a bit in the rough at present, but should shake up in time for the hurdle racing at Christmas, for which she is intended. The maiden Round Table is showing good form and is to race in the maiden race next week, when he will be ridden ■by B. H. Morris. This hill-relative to High Falutiu' looks like being useful over a. distance when properly seasoned. C'opey returned in good shape from Riccartoii, but his owner-trainer (J. Fryer) states that he is to be turned out for a good spell and is not likely to be raced until the next steeplechasing season rolls round. The Tiger has resumed regular: track work, but his tasks are at present of the easy order. He is looking in good order, and will probably be seen out at the Wanganui Spring Meeting. Richfield is hitting out well, and finished alongside Little Doubt over five furlongs yesterday morning in lmin .5 3-ssec. Whenuakura had his first try-out at the barrier during the week aud jumped away nice for a novice. . There was very little fast work performed yesterday morning, solid pace work being given to the majority of the horses to race next week. On the plough, Haunui, Weatherzane, j j and March Alone were companions over half a mile. March Alone finished in front in 53sec. v Round Table sprinted : home three furlongs in 43see on. the sand. St. Clara, Don Erma; Silver Band, and' Carfex all performed solid pace work. Aga Khan, Flying East, Attentive, Oriel, Sandlark, and Gibraltar did routine work.
