Representatives of Auckland antfl AVcllington secondary schools met in aj curtain-raiser to the Chatham. Cup) match. The game was fast and. openj with the general run of play favouring] Wellington. The match, however, ended! in a draw, 1-all. The teams were:— Auckland.—Higgison; . Macfarlane* West; v Chambers, Sims, Lattaa McGowan, Woods, Flyger (captain)J IPyvie, and Gilbert. Wellington.—Cutlibfirt; KnowsleyJ Quirk; Marshall, Cocks (captain)j McCluue; Thomas, McNaughtonJj Mackic, Boyes, and Hatchard. Auckland kicked off with the sun'at their backs and were soon hammering away .in their opponents' territory. Woods, the visiting inside light, cam© through, the field and narrowly missed a score, play then swinging downfield. The Wellington forwards failed to penetrate the defence, and Auckland returned to attack. A miss-kick by McGowan, when in a favourable position, lost an opportunity to open scoring, and once more Wellington camo back. Play swung up and down field for a period, MeGowan and Gilbert being prominent in. the Auckland, van, and Quirk, McClune, and Maekie making their presence felt for Wellington. From a long shot Maekie narrowly missed scoring, and a few moments later Hatehard failed by the smallest of margins. Wellington now seemed to be asserting themselves, and two successive corners just failed to Bring results. Auckland fought hard and eventually McGowan got away on thai right wing. He centred to . Plyger, who missed badly. A moment later,however, Woods was in position and he beat the Wellington goalkeeper^ Half-time was called with, tho score^ Auckland, 1; Wellington, 0. Up tod the interval the quality of the foot-j ball played had not been high, Auckland showing the better combination. On resumption 'Wellington started off smartly, and from well out Marshall gent in an excellent dropping shot which completely beat Higgison. 1-all* End to end jplay followed, eventually) concentrating round the Auckland goalmouth, where the visitors had several lucky escapes. The local . forwards were now going well, but failing to apply the finishing touches, and bot-i sides were battling hard. 'Marshall and Hatehard figured largely in the Wellington attack, but the Auckland defence, combined with careless play; on the part of Wellington, prevented scoring. Cocks drove in when twenty; yards from the Auckland goal. Higgison brought off a fine save, and Auckland took the offensive. A final burst by Wellington failed when ■ Higgison xau] out fifteen yards and cleared from the} feet of advancing forwards. The game1 ended with honours even. • Mr. E. Williams was the referee.
