LONDON, August 24. Speaking at the Conference of the Institute of Journalists at Eastbourne, of the new menaces to the liberty of the Press, Mr. J, E. Scott, of the "Manchester Guardian," said that the Eeichstag fire occurred at 9 p.m. An hour later the whole of the Opposition i newspapers had been suppressed. ! The nineteenth century, he said, had i witnessed a widespread extension of \ freedom to the Press, and it was regarded as almost axiomatic that in due course all countries would establish a j free Press, but much ground had been lost by • the restrictions reimposed. Mr. Scott instanced Germany, Kussia, Italy, and the Balkans.
