CHINAMAN FINED

(By Telegraph. — l'ressi Association.) AUCKLAND, August 24. A market gardener, Jueing Hing, aged oOj was fined £15, in default eighteen weeks' imprisonment, today for stealing cauliflowers from neighbouring gardens. Ho was caught by a policeman at 1.30 a.m. and the prosecutor alleged that ho had menaced the policeman with a knife. Counsel said that the accused belonged to a clan of which there was only one other member in Auckland, and it was alleged that the major clans, the Wongs and Fongs, were badly disposed towards him.

Two-way traffic is to be permitted in the portion of Bowen Street south of the War Memorial until-further notice.
