THOSE SLOW TIMES!
AGUA CALIENTE TRIALS
Undoubtedly racing men we're surprised to note the extraordinary training times cabled for trial gallops at Agua Caliente last week. What would our trainers have thought if the "best gallop of the morning" was 2min 20 l-ssec for a mile, even through the heaviest of winter mud!'
'It was obvious, as all times were relatively of the same tardigrade measure, that there was more in the cable than met the eye. And there was.
It is understood that all horses doing trials at Agua Caliente must'wear boots over their hoofs, and, of course, this would be antply sufficient to account for the otherwise .ludicrous times recorded. The reason for the boots is probably that the Agua Caliente Meeting lasts eighty days, with sometimes upwards of 1500 horses accommodated there. It would be patently impossible to provide tracks that would stand up. to the working of such a number of horses over such a period if the galloping were done' in shoes, plates,' or barefoot.
