SENATE APPOINTMENT
MR. J. A. VALENTINE
The Minister of Education (the Hon. B. Masters) announced today that his Excellency the Governor-General . had appointed Mr. James Archibald Valentine, 8.A., of. New Plymouth, to be a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, vice.Mr. T. H. Macky, resigned. :
Mr. Valentino was educated at the Waikouaiti School, Otago, where he served as a pupil teacher. Afterwards he attended tho Duuedhv Training College and the University of Otago, obtaining his B.A. degree in 1887. His teaching service in Otago totalled 17$ years, and he served for a similaT period in South- Canterbury as head master of Pareora School and of the Timaru South School.
In 1913 he was appointed secretary and assistant inspector to tho South Canterbury Education Board, and when that board was absorbed by tho Canterbury Board in 1915, he became- an inspector of schools under the Education Department, being stationed in Hokitika and Christchurch. Then he was transferred to the Taranaki education district as senior inspector of schools, a position which he held until he retired. He also served as a senior relieving officer in the Education Department for several pionths.
In 1926^. Valentine was selected .to visit the Cook Islands to report on the education, system of the group. In 1928 he visited Great Britain and spent some time amongst various educational institutions there. In 1929 he became a member of the Taranaki Education Board, and in 1930 he was elected de-puty-chairman of the board, a position which he still holds.
